Bluelanders protest at battalion headquarters
Article published 18.09.99 22:50 Finnish time

The headquarters for 2nd Nordic Battalion at Vampula faced aggression from local residents at around 1400 hrs on Saturday afternoon.

The confrontation began as a group of drunken local residents tried to made their way into HQ area. At first these intentions were quashed by guards, but soon the horde of those hostile to UN had gained in number to some 50, and the peacekeepers were forced to withdraw to cover the HQ building.

An armoured personnel carrier was steered to cover the front door with the guards grouping to defend the entrances. While the peacekeepers were trying to cool the situation off, further 50 local residents arrived at the scene. The newcomers were UN-minded, and soon a fracas developed between the two groups. The guards, merely 20 strong, could do little to end the fighting but had to concentrate on protective duties.

It took the appearance of a local popular leader and a Bluelander gunman until negotiations started to progress. Tension eased, and the HQ guards started rolling barbed wire obstacles at points of entry.

Peaceful protest at Eura

A demonstration also took place at the Finno-Danish 1st Bn headquarters in Eura. Here, however, a group of about 70 Greyland locals contented to a quiet protest before the HQ building.

The protesters grouped on the yard and stayed there for about ten minutes, after which they left the candles and bricks they carried on the outside and left.

The gesture appeared to imitate those sometimes seen in Bosnia.
