HISTORY
The Tampere Regiment used to operate in Hennala from 1919 to 1949, and
the Häme Regiment cherishes its traditions dating back to the 17th
century.
The first Häme Regiment was founded by King Gustavus II
Adolphus in 1626. Throughout the Swedish period, the regiment continued
to operate, participating in all wars fought by Sweden-Finland. Under
Russian rule, the unit served under the names of Hämeenlinna Battalion
or Rifle Battalion until the Finnish army was disbanded in 1902.
Having participated under various names in Finland's War of Independence, the
Tampere Regiment was formed in 1919. The activity of the unit ended at
the beginning of the Winter War in 1939. The Häme Regiment was
established on 1 January 1986 by uniting the independent units in the
Hennala Garrison under one command.
The colours of the regiment are the
old red and white flag of the Tampere Regiment, and the march of honour,
March of Parola, is also inherited from the same regiment. The
anniversary of the regiment is celebrated on 3 October, the day when the
Finnish Ministry of Defence made the decision to establish the regiment.
