Light AA gun

Light AA guns have an important role alongside AA machine guns in close-range AA fire and troop protection. Their targets include combat helicopters and low-flying assault aircraft.

Close-range AA weapon for troops

The classification of light AA guns varies from one country to another. Usually, guns with a calibre of 20 to 30 mm are included in this category. Light AA guns of Soviet origin have calibres of 23 and 30 mm; in the West, the most common calibre is 20 mm.

Most of the guns have twin barrels, but three-barrel and four-barrel models exist too. The 20 mm Vulcan gun manufactured in the USA has no fewer than six barrels, giving the gun a momentary maximum firing rate of about 50 shots per second.

The Soviet-made 23 mm AA gun ‘Sergei’ was introduced in the early 1960s. It is the most common type of light AA gun in the world.
