Increasing demands for range and mobility are being placed on AA systems for armoured and mechanized troops. In addition to being mobile, the systems must provide their crews with the same cover as they are providing for the troops they protect.
These demands have led to the development of AA tanks. The main targets of such systems are anti-tank helicopters and other combat helicopters.
The most modern systems are independent and capable of airspace surveillance even when mobile. A tank can begin firing within seconds of stopping.

A Marksman AA gun turret is fitted on the chassis of a T 55 tank. The system includes a combined surveillance and forward observer radar.
