The first AA missiles were introduced in Finland in the late 1970s with the acquisition of ItO 79 Pechora area defence AA missiles for protecting the Helsinki area. This left a gap in the regional AA capacity, although a sufficient number of automatic AA guns capable of covering the remaining ranges were retained.
The state-of-the-art Crotale NG equipment acquired in the 1990s fills this gap admirably. It is capable of intercepting not only aircraft and helicopters but cruise missiles too.
