Finland's fragmented coastline sets special demands on not only combat ships but also transport ships and boats. To make the best of the features of the archipelago, transport vessels must have the capacity to move at high speed even outside normal channels in very shallow waters. The most remote islands must be reached quickly and reliably. The Meriuisko-class vessels developed in Finland in the 1980s meet these demands easily. Their top speed exceeds 30 knots, they have a very small draught of 0.5 m and excellent landing capacity even on shallow and rocky beaches, allowing for surprise attacks in almost any condition. The Meriuisko fast assault boat developed on Finland caters extremely well for all the transport needs of the coastal forces and the Navy in difficult archipelago conditions.
