Sea mines

Impulse mines were first used in the Second World War. Modern impulse mines, also used by the Finnish Navy, are extremely powerful weapons and very effective deterrents. Unlike most other weapons, they have managed to stay ahead of any countermeasures.

Mines are the Finnish Navy's principal weapons. Their prohibition, which has been suggested, would mean a massive and extremely costly revamp of our naval defence system. Finland already has the ability to implement restrictions aimed to protect civilians.

Recent crises and wars indicate that mines play an increasingly important role in naval warfare. Mine barrages that close channels and areas suitable for landing are a quick and effective means of restricting the operations of an attacker.

Combination mine barrages, which include both contact and impulse mines, are amongst the most effective and most difficult to clear.
