Ships, especially on the high sea, are always susceptible to airborne attack. For this reason, the archipelago is used to provide cover. Contact vessels remain, however, appealing targets for an attacker's aircraft and helicopters. Typical modes of attack include cannon and rocket assaults and precision weapons.
Because of this, versatile anti-aircraft measures have become an important part of combat ships' weapons systems. Special consideration has also been given to passive protection, concealment and diversion measures. Good mobility is also very useful, especially within the archipelago.
Because the ship is moving and carrying anti-aircraft weapons systems while it also needs to protect itself, its weapons must meet very demanding requirements. It is no surprise that ships are often equipped with anti-aircraft systems that are more advanced than those used on land.
