History of the Defence Forces

The February Revolution in Russia in 1917 also left Finland in a state of confusion. To calm the situation, two armed groups, the Civil Guard and the Red Guards, were formed. Since the country did not have its own army, one of the two had to be chosen to be Finland's official armed forces.
